Apuglia a lesser known region in Italy has some of the brightest seas and beautiful landscapes, rich history, diverse culture, mouthwatering food and kindest people of Italy. How many of you have heard of the Tuscany or Sicily regions of Italy?

Or the bigger cities of Italy: Rome, Milan, Naples or Venice? Most people in the United States are very familiar with these regions and cities of Italy.

Today I have chosen to tell you about Puglia, because it holds a special place in my heart. Puglia is where my family and ancestors are from and where many of my family members still live today. It is a long, narrow peninsula of mostly plains and hills with some mountains and steep cliffs overlooking the ocean.

Puglia is very arid and dry; its landscape is very similar to Greece or parts of the Middle East. The region has over miles of coastline on two seas, the Adriatic to the East and the Ionian to the west.

It is presently divided into 6 provinces: The region was always a strategic area for Mediterranean peoples. Originally Puglia was inhabited by Illyrians, and early on was colonized by the Greeks. The Greeks founded the colony of Taranto — where my Grandfather was born.

In the 4th century the Romans began their conquest of the territory and built the Via Appia the historic Roman road to connect it to Rome.

In the 10th century the Eastern Roman Empire defeated the Saracens and came in control, but the cities of Puglia were already rising in power and wanted more autonomy. The Normans gave way to the Swabians, then the Anjous and then the Aragonese.

The region suffered from bad government until the 18th century when it came under control of the Bourbons. In Puglia was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy and at that time was divided into only three provinces: Bari, Foggia and Lecce. Taranto and Brindisi were added in And Barletta-Andria-Trani was established in Because of its varied history and the different languages spoken in this region for centuries, there are a number of very different dialects spoken and influences in the region.

Of unknown origin and unique to Puglia, they date at least from the Middle Ages. Most are still inhabited today, as are many in my family. Art in Puglia is not so much a masterpiece in a museum, but a whole downtown of a city or village, for example Locorotondo is a village where everything is white except for the bright splashes of red flowers or wrought-iron balconies.

Medieval masterpieces are everywhere on the Eastern coast of Puglia, including the Castel del Monte, known as the octagonal castle built by Emperor Frederick II — one of the most powerful men in the Middle Ages. The Galapagos Islands Introduction Just off the coast of Ecuador is where you can find the volcanic islands of the you can find unique animals and plants that can’t be seen anywhere else in the world.
